Pharm.D. Candidates ASHP Anaheim-bound

Sarah Jung and Monica Lee to Represent College in National Clinical Skills Competition at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting

Following their win at the local level, Pharm.D. candidates Sarah Jung and Monica Lee will represent UH College of Pharmacy in the American Society of Health-System Pharmaicsts National Clinical Skills Competition at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., in December.

Jung and Lee won the P3/P4 category, and the team of Krutina Patel Garcia and Stephanie Pham won in the P1/P2 category. The top finalists in each category were Sunny Bhakta and Salman Farooqui  P3/P4 category, while second-year students Susan Lowrie and Amber Strickland claimed second place in the P1/P2 category.

A total of 32 teams competed in this year's local competition, which is divided into two parts: development of a care plan and an oral presentation. Each team is presented a complex patient case provided by ASHP, and given two hours to develop a care plan that includes a health problems list, treatment goals, and recommendations for therapy and monitoring parameters. The top 10 teams are then invited to make an oral presentation consisiting of a 3-minute overview of the patient's primary/most critical health problem and a 7-minute question-and-answer session with standardized questions from the judges.  

The winners and finalists of the local competition were announced during the UHCOP Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists' 5th Annual Residency Workshop Oct. 6. The workshop featured individual presentations as well as a Question & Answer panel with pharmacy residency program representatives in the Greater Houston area:

  • Chester Ashong, Pharm.D., PGY-2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy resident, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center;
  • Ryan Hudson, Pharm.D. (UH '14), PGY-1 Community Pharmacy resident, Walgreens Co.;
  • Lindsey Smith, Pharm.D., PGY-2/M.S. Pharmacy Administration resident, Memorial Hermann System Pharmacy;
  • Quintin Broussard, Pharm.D. (UH '14), and Regina Roy, PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice residents, CHI St. Luke's Health/Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center; and
  • Tami Johnson, Pharm.D., BCPS, FCCM, PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program Director, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
