The college also welcomed back to campus several members of the Class of 1964 "Golden Cougars" in honor of the 50th anniversary of their graduation from UHCOP. The 1964 alumni who celebrated their "Golden Cougar" status at the commencement were Fred S. McDuffie, George P. Barnes, Donald Michael Padgett, Sam E. Wood Jr., David DeVido, Harry Bullock Mason Jr., Prentiss G. Crowe Jr., and Gus Elizondo, and were joined at an after-event luncheon by classmate Nicholas J. Martino.

Among the special guests at the event were UH System Regent Benjamin P. Wells, who received his J.D. degree later in the day from the UH Law Center, and Rear Admiral Scott F. Giberson, Acting Deputy Assistant Surgeon General and Chief Professional Officer (CPO), Pharmacy, for the U.S. Public Health Service.

"I can tell you sincerely that I am encouraged and excited about the future of health in Texas and our country because of these graduates," Giberson said in opening his remarks.

Giberson invoked the final words from "Invictus," penned in the late 19th century by poet William Ernest Henley, to inspire the graduates: "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."

"With your level of education and expanding role in the healthcare system, you can position yourself now to play an integral role in an individual's health and the health of the nation," Giberson said. "Do not be satisfied with the status quo; you and your loved ones deserve better, the nation deserves better. The choice is yours to make a difference."
