College Promotes Health, Wellness in Humble Easter Weekend

Students Perform 500+ Free Screenings to Community at Health Fair

0402 Houston -- For many students, study breaks may involve catching up on TV, sleep or Facebook posts. For UH College of Pharmacy Pharm.D. students, their precious few hours they're not in class or poring through thick textbooks of formulas and therapeutic protocols often are spent providing hands-on clinical pharmacy services to the community.

The most recent event -- a community health fair on March 30 sponsored by the Humble Cardiovascular Associates of Humble -- saw more than 80 UHCOP students performing 500-plus cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks and diabetic foot exams for Humble-area residents.

UHCOP students and faculty members then counseled screening particpants on their results and answered questions about prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as general health and wellness issues.

Students also took the opportunity to educate nearly 200 attendees on a variety of health and wellness issues, including prescription drug abuse and medication safety, tobacco cessation, and heartburn awareness.
