Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

Need Help understanding the T.S.I.? Click here! What is the TSI?

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a requirement mandated by the state of Texas designed to assess the academic skill levels of each undergraduate student entering any public university or college in Texas.

Why is the TSI important to me?

The University of Houston requires that you be TSI Compliant before you can register for Orientation. The University requires that you be TSI Complete before you can enroll in classes.

How do I pass this requirement?

The following step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process of fulfilling your TSI requirement so you can enroll in classes.

Check TSI Exemption Criteria

The first step in determining your TSI Status is to check the exemption criteria and see if any apply to you.

Next Step: Are you exempt or non-compliant?

Possibly TSI Exempt

If you meet one of the exemption criteria, you need to fax proof of this exemption to the UScholars Office at 713-743-8998. We recommend you call UScholars at 832-842-2100 to verify they received your documentation.

Next Step: TSI Exempt

TSI Non-Compliant

If you don't meet any of the exemption criteria, you are TSI Non-Compliant. You need to take an additional assessment test (THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMPASS).

Next Step: Choose a Testing Location

TSI Exempt

After the UScholars Office has received and processed your documentation, you are officially TSI Exempt!

You are now TSI Compliant. If you have taken the Math Placement Exam, you can register for Orientation.

You are also TSI Complete.

Next Step: TSI Complete

Houston

If you live in the Houston area, you can register online at las.uh.edu/uts to take the THEA or ACCUPLACER at the University of Houston main campus.

Next Step: Send Your Scores

Texas

If you live in Texas but would prefer not to drive to Houston, you can take the THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMPASS at any college or university that offers them.

Next Step: Send Your Scores

Non-Texas: Option 1

If you don't live in Texas and a college or university near you offers the ASSET or COMPASS tests, you can take it there.

Next Step: Send Your Scores

Non-Texas: Option 2

If you don't live in Texas, you can take the ACCUPLACER online.

Simply find a college or university near you that has a testing center. Contact Patrick Daniel at pdaniel@uh.edu and he will help you set it up.

Next Step: Send Your Scores

Send Your Scores

Once you have taken an assessment test (THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMPASS), please fax your scores to the UScholars Office at 713-743-8998. We recommend you call UScholars at 832-842-2100 to verify they received your documentation.

Next Step: TSI Compliant

TSI Compliant

After UScholars has received and processed your scores, you are officially TSI Compliant!

If you have taken the Math Placement Exam, you can now register for Orientation, regardless of what score you made on your assessment test.

Next step: Did you pass your assessment test?

Passing Score

If you made a passing score on your assessment test, congratulations! You are now TSI Complete.

Next Step: TSI Complete

Non-Passing Score

If you did not make a passing score, you need to meet with a UScholars advisor before or during Orientation to discuss your enrollment options for TSI Completion.

After meeting with the UScholars advisor, you will be allowed to enroll in classes. However, the process to officially become TSI Complete may take awhile depending on the plan you and the UScholars advisor agree upon.

Next Step: TSI Complete

Congratulations!

You may enroll for classes at Orientation or any time afterward.
