The game of Murderball, the moniker that describes the intensity of wheelchair rugby, usually is associated with male athletes, but Adaptive Athletics @ UH is inviting women to learn the sport. The group is hosting the Women’s Wheelchair Rugby Summer Camp at the University of Houston, July 7 – 10 at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
“This workshop will emphasize skills and game play settings. We’ll also play some games,” said Laura Ramirez, program coordinator for the event. “We want to create opportunities for athletes with disabilities, but we also want to advance the sport for women.”
The camp is open to women of all ages and of all athletic levels, with disabilities in three or more limbs. Those who need a rugby chair will be accommodated. There is no charge to participate. For more information contact Adaptive Athletics.
Wheelchair rugby is recognized internationally for men and women, though the number of women athletes is much lower.
The summer camp is one of three annual events for Adaptive Athletics, which also hosts COOG Cup for wheelchair rugby athletes around the country and the SMASH Tournament for wheelchair and able-bodied athletes. Additionally, Adaptive Athletics hosts an adaptive tennis program.
Founded in 2013, Adaptive Athletics @ UH is a student organization housed in the Department of Health and Human Performance. Its goal is to create a UH athletics program for students with disabilities.
