New Exhibition at UH M.D. Anderson Library Spotlights LGBTQI Literature

The University of Houston’s M.D. Anderson Library is showcasing a collection of distinct literary voices in “LGBTQI Literature: Celebrated Classics & Contemporary Works.” Presented by UH Libraries Special Collections, the exhibition spotlights meaningful works that are connected to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex communities.

“LGBTQI Literature” will open to the public on June 20 to run concurrently with Houston Pride Week. It will be on view through Sept. 26 on the first floor of M.D. Anderson Library (Entrance 1 off Calhoun Road).

Works on view will include fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama from Special Collections. These include pre-Stonewall classics including a second edition of Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” Radclyffe Hall’s “The Well of Loneliness” and Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando.” Also on view will be works published during the gay and women’s liberation movements during the 1970s – Andrew Holleran’s “Dancer from the Dance,” Rita Mae Brown’s “Rubyfruit Jungle.” Works depicting the AIDS crisis also will be represented including Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” and poetry from former UH professor Mark Doty and Thom Gunn. Contemporary works on view will include Jeffery Eugenides’ “Middlesex” and “Alison Bechdel’s “A Family Tragicomic.”

“LGBTQI Literature” works are made available by the Norma J. Lee Collection, the Edward Lukasek Gay Studies Collection and the Library of Cynthia Macdonald.
