UH Dance Students Keep Moving in March

University Dance Theatre to Present ‘March Madness’ on March 5, ‘Opus’ on March 28

Thanks to the University of Houston, March is the month for modern dance. The University Dance Theatre (UDT) will deliver two concerts that spotlight works choreographed and performed by students.

At 7 p.m., March 5, UDT will host its annual  “March Madness” concert in Studio 208 in UH’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. This free, informal salon will feature both finished pieces and works in progress. It also provides audiences with an opportunity to view the complexity of these works in an intimate setting. This event is presented by the UH School of Theatre & Dance.University Dance Theatre

“Compared to a theater, this is a fairly small environment,” said senior Jessica Capistran. “The audience can see the dances from different angles and will catch on to some things they wouldn’t see on stage. It’s also a very informal event.”

Capistran will perform an untitled duet set to the music of Edith Piaf. Her partner on this piece is junior Ali DiNunzio. She also will present “From Within,” a piece she choreographed in fall 2011. Set to music by Zoe Keating, it features four dancers and explores the human heart.

Both of these pieces are among the works featured at UDT’s “Opus.” This concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Houston’s Barnvelder Movement/Arts Complex (2201 Preston St.). This formal concert will showcase complete works and is produced by the UH Dance Theatre. In addition to performing, students are handling all technical aspects of production (light design, sound, costume coordination).

“As an artist, you always want to immerse yourself in the entire process. This concert lets us do that,” DiNunzio said. “We’re able to see this show from the inside and outside, which is very helpful for all of us as students.”

Tickets for “Opus” are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. They will be available at the door on the night of the performance.
