UH Announces Grand Opening of LGBT Resource Center, June 30

Lorraine Schroeder Named First Director

The University of Houston announces the grand opening of its first Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center to offer support to LGBT students, faculty and staff, and expand the culture of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance on campus.

UH will host its grand opening of the LGBT Resource Center from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 30, room 279A - a space it shares with the Women's Resource Center - located on the second floor of the University Center (UC).  The event will include special guest Houston City Councilwoman Sue Lovell.  By bringing new and used books or DVDs to the event, attendees can help create the LGBT Resource Center's lending library. All donors who wish to be identified will have their names printed on the inside cover of the book or DVD. Guests are invited to meet LGBT Resource Center director Lorraine Schroeder, enjoy refreshments, learn about upcoming programs and LGBT minor, and win great door prizes

The LGBT Resource Center is positioned within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences under the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program.  It will serve LGBT students, staff, and faculty with an emphasis on education, programming and advocacy.

"The new LGBT Resource Center will begin to educate campus and community constituencies on LGBT issues through programming about sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, advocacy, leadership, and visibility," said Lorraine Schroeder, who serves as the center's first director. "We know that when students feel connected and part of the campus community they are more likely to graduate. I am honored to be a part of a program that will clearly have a positive impact on the success of our LGBT students."

Schroeder is a founding member of the Cougar Ally Training (CAT) group on campus and is active in the faculty and staff group, Cougar Allies, which seeks to improve the campus climate for LGBT staff, faculty, and students. Schroeder earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Wisconsin and a Masters of Arts in clinical psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara, Ca.
