This week, Lewis returns to the campus he first entered in 1979 on an athletic scholarship, championing a cause through his involvement and support that will enable other UH students to further their education through scholarships funded by an endowment.
Lewis, along with Gerald W. McElvy, President of ExxonMobil Foundation, is assisting three University of Houston alumni constituent groups whose missions include uniting and reuniting Cougars in support of UH President Renu Khator's "big rock" initiatives in the areas of student access, student success, community outreach and excellence in athletics. These initiatives all are factors in UH's drive to attain Tier-One status as an elite research university.
Lewis and McElvy, each a UH Distinguished Alumnus, will be honored at a private reception from 5-7 p.m., Thursday (Sept. 3) at the Hilton University of Houston Hotel. Khator will introduce the pair, who also will serve as honorary chairmen of the University of Houston Cougars Athletic Alliance (UHCAA) Third Annual Golf Challenge, which takes place Friday (Sept. 4) at Wildcat Golf Course. ExxonMobil will sponsor the golf outing.
The golf tournament is sponsored by The University of Houston Cougars Athletic Alliance, UHCAA which seeks to strengthen the relationship between UH alumni, students and the university while reuniting former athletes and friends. The UH Black Alumni Association, the Black Leadership Network of UH faculty and staff and UHCAA have collaborated to ensure that a variety of scholarships and programs exist for students in perpetuity at UH.
Proceeds from the golf challenge support the African American Initiative for Scholarships.
Another scholarship program the proceeds will benefit is teachHouston - an innovative new teacher training program at UH that encourages some of the most promising math, science and computer science majors to pursue careers in teaching.
