They won’t scurry aboard speedboats or scale glaciers to find clues, but incoming math and science majors at the University of Houston will dash across campus 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28 in their own exciting version of the popular TV show “The Amazing Race.”

Frosh Frenzy, an event common at college campuses across the United States, pits teams against each other to see which will be first to complete a course of university buildings and landmarks. This will be the first such event at UH sponsored by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM). Students will wear neon yellow T-shirts and follow clues to move from one location to the next, with members of first-, second- and third-place teams drawing for book scholarships and other prizes.

The event is designed to familiarize incoming students with the campus and allows them to network with fellow NSM students, faculty, staff and representatives of student organizations and student services. It also will provide a venue for students to learn how to get involved in the college.

Free pizza, a DJ, volleyball, video games and an appearance by Shasta, the UH mascot, also await attendees.

“Our goal in creating Frosh Frenzy is to ensure that our incoming students feel welcome on campus, have a positive college transition experience and enjoy overwhelming academic success by being connected and aware of resources available to them,” said Dawnelle Prince-Parks, director of undergraduate recruitment for NSM. “In the long term, activities like this should lead to increased student retention and future successful, loyal alumni.”
