Millions of toys manufactured in China are being recalled in the United
States because of the use of lead paint, which is toxic if ingested by
young children and can cause various forms of health impairment and disease.
Donald Fox More than 300,000 of the affected products already have been
purchased by consumers, creating widespread concerns among parents and
health officials. In addition to toys, inexpensive jewelry manufactured
in China also has the potential for health problems and has caught the
attention of the national media. Donald A. Fox, professor of pharmacology
at the UH College of Optometry and the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics,
has done extensive research on the developmental defects exposure to lead
can have on vision. Fox, a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences
who has conducted research on lead for more than 30 years, is currently
examining lead-induced abnormalities to the retina at the cellular level.
