The panel will discuss the nature of humanistic teaching and research and the important role they must play in creating a top-tier institution. The humanities in higher education, while traditionally playing a central role, has been marginalized as universities increasingly measure their success by the number of federal dollars attracted for technological and scientific research. The panel's discussion will center on the need for humanities professors and departments to reassure legislators, administrators and students that expressing oneself well in speech and writing, understanding history, applying moral and ethical standards in all transactions, learning languages and communicating with other peoples in an ever-shrinking world are all essential parts of advanced learning and human progress.
