Benefits - COBRA Definition What is COBRA?

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits for up to 18 months following:

  • termination of employment
  • loss of coverage following leave without pay
  • reduction in work hours

The 18-month continuation may be extended to 36 months if a secondary qualifying event occurs during the initial 18-monty period. You are never entitled to more than 36 months of COBRA.

COBRA premiums are calculated at 102% of the current group rate, and this is payable by the covered party, NOT by the University of Houston.
