Houston Scholar: Victor Yau

Victor Yau has a passion for languages and cross-cultural exchange encouraged him to obtain funding to participate in an intensive Chinese language and culture immersion program at the Dalian University of Technology (DUT) in a 3-week program in which international students studied Chinese language and culture while living in Dalian, China. There, Victor participated in four hours daily of language study with the goal of gaining advanced proficiency in Mandarin. No stranger to language immersion, Victor was a prior recipient of the CLS scholarship to Korea, where he increased his proficiency in Korean from Novice to Intermediate.

Future Direction: Victor aspires to use his knowledge of languages and foreign cultures to become a foreign service officer. Victor plans to apply for the Pickering and the Boren nationally competitive scholarships.

About Houston Scholars

Supported by the Provost's Office and the Honors College, the Houston Scholars program is designed to bolster students’ academic and professional goals through faculty mentoring, research proposal development, and a semester discussion series led by University of Houston faculty from across the campus. Houston Scholars will also learn about national and international award opportunities, and receive assistance in developing applications for competitive programs.
