Houston Scholar: Khalid Sheikh

"Through Houston Scholars, I have been able to pursue my interest in clinical pediatric endocrinology by working with Dr. Daniel DeSalvo at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) to use evidence based practice as a means to improve patient care in the TCH Diabetes and Endocrine Care Center."

Major: Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences
Houston Scholars Project:
Measuring the Prevalence and Efficacy of Advanced Diabetes Technology in Pediatric Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
Advisor:  Dr. Daniel DeSalvo, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital

This summer, Khalid will be conducting diabetes research under the guidance of Dr. Daniel DeSalvo and the Care Process Team (CPT) at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. Khalid will assist with data analysis and processing for a set of interventions recently initiated by the CPT. These interventions seek to increase nutritional education and technology use in diabetic patients. The ultimate goal of this study is to improve outpatient care for diabetic patients in the Houston area. Khalid is also an active member of the Bonner Leadership Program, where he co-leads Lobo Prep, an afterschool SAT preparation program at Cesar Chavez High School.

Future Direction:  Upon graduation, Khalid will pursue an MD to become a pediatric endocrinologist.
