"Still Confronting the Ground": HAPS 2010 Kickoff
The Center for Creative Work kicked off its Spring 2010 Honors & the Arts Program Series (HAPS) with the contemporary dance program “Still Confronting the Ground” by choreographer jhon stronks and the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company. Fifteen dancers performed a highly structured tuning exercise before launching into an hour of wildly athletic dancing that moved seamlessly between improvisation and set choreography, powerful introspection and dynamic exuberance, all in pursuit of the happy, roiling mess of being alive. The musical score was adapted on the spot, mirroring the dance as well as the collage of costumes (think dress-up trunk superheroes) that crossed the floor. Following the performance, the Met dancers and jhon stronks fielded questions from Honors College students and Houston dance patrons in an informal talk-back hosted by the Center for Creative Work.
