Sickness is expensive in terms of time and money. The University strongly encourages all students to carry health insurance. The student health insurance plan is endorsed by and designed especially for the University of Houston.
The University of Houston Health Center accepts only the University endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan. For services rendered at the University Health Center, you are responsible only for payment of any applicable co-pays and ineligible expenses for services rendered at the Health Center. The University Health Center will bill the insurance company for any eligible expenses. Services obtained outside the Health Center are subject to deductibles and co-insurance requirements for eligible expenses, and all other policy provisions/limitations.
Undergraduate students attending the University of Houston who are enrolled in 6 or more credit hours (3 for summer session) are eligible to enroll for coverage in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan within the posted open enrollment time period.
Graduate students attending the University of Houston who are enrolled in 3 or more credit hours are eligible to enroll for coverage in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan within the posted open enrollment time period.
Eligible domestic students may enroll directly through Academic HealthPlans during the Open Enrollment Period each semester.
International students with “F” or “J” visa status are required to be covered under the UHS Student Health Insurance Plan or have equivalent health insurance coverage, regardless of the number of credit hours taken. At the time of registration, the student will automatically be enrolled in the mandatory UHS-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and will be charged for the coverage period on their student financial account.
All international students are required to read and acknowledge the University of Houston International Student Health Insurance Requirement each semester.
University of Houston Student Health Insurance ID card can be obtained online by accessing the Blue Access for Members (BAM) site.
Students enrolled in the University of Houston System (UH) Student Health Insurance Plan are eligible for CONTINUATION OF COVERAGE underwritten by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Continuation of Coverage is only available to Insured Students no longer eligible for coverage under the UH Student Health Insurance Plan. A letter (or certificate) of Creditable Coverage is a document provided by the insurance carrier that includes the insured member’s name and the coverage effective/cancelation dates.
Students enrolled in the UHS endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) may request this letter directly from Academic HealthPlans. Requests should be sent via email to email@example.com and include the member’s full name and university ID number.
