As a new incoming student to The University of Houston it is important that you be aware that the Texas State law (SB 1107) was passed during the 2009 Texas legislative session and recently signed into law. The new law, which is effective January 1, 2012, requires all first-time students and transfer students attending an institution of higher education under the age of 30 in the state of Texas, show evidence of having received the Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination or documentation of a valid exemption.
You must have received the vaccination within the last five years and at least ten (10) days prior to taking up residence in an on-campus housing facility. Students who have been approved to reside in an on-campus housing facility, but who have not received a vaccination in a timely manner will be expected to make alternate arrangements for housing until the full 10 days have elapsed. The law also allows for exemptions on medical grounds or reasons of conscience, including religious belief.
