After Hours Options

All UH students are eligible to speak with a nurse for confidential, practical advice 24 hours a day at no charge. You can discuss a current illness or injury as well as discuss chronic medical concerns. The number is 866‐315‐8756.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency and are on the UH campus, call the UH Police at 713-743-3333.  If you are anywhere else, call 9-1-1.

In case of an emergency involving your eyes, you may call the Ocular Diagnostic and Medical Eye Service of the UH Eye Institute at 713‐743‐2010 immediately. Symptoms that require prompt attention include sudden loss of vision, seeing flashes of light, unusual light sensitivity, extreme pain, and/or redness of the eye(s). Licensed practitioners are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you get sick after hours, on weekends or holidays and you would like to be seen by a physician, you may seek off‐campus health care. There are many options in the Houston area. The list below offers some suggestions and does not include all available medical clinics or hospitals.

  • It is the responsibility of the student to understand the details of their particular health insurance policy (e.g., costs, limitations, etc.). Don't forget to bring your photo ID and health insurance card with you if you seek urgent care.
  • The list below does not constitute an endorsement. The clinics and hospitals presented have no contractual or any other type of, relationship with the University of Houston Health Center or the physicians of the Health Center.

Understanding Your Options

Many insurance plans, including the UH Student Health Insurance Plan, include a deductible, co-payment and co-insurance.  That means that the higher the bill, the more money YOU pay out of YOUR own pocket!  Visit an Urgent Care Center for a sore throat, and your average bill will be $94; at an Emergency Room, the average bill comes to $525.

Students enrolled in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan can locate a Preferred Provider at www.phcs.com or by calling 888-560-7427.
