Fellowships & Scholarships

Looking for ways to fund your graduate education? If you can demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and/or community involvement, you may qualify for a fellowship or scholarship at the University of Houston. More than 1,400 graduate fellowships are offered each year to qualified students in all fields of study.

Scholarships and fellowships may be awarded based on merit, financial need, diversity, or other circumstantial and academic major considerations.

Here’s a look at some of the University-wide options. Many colleges and departments also offer their own fellowships, and you can also explore scholarships from outside sources.

Fellowship Opportunities

The following two-year fellowships are available to students who enter graduate or professional programs at the University of Houston.  Students of exceptional caliber who represent extraordinary academic credentials receive these fellowships.  Award amounts vary according to the academic goals and background of the recipient.

Amount: The fellowship includes a grant of $20,000 per year for two years and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the US graduate program attended by the Fellow (up to a maximum of $16,000 per academic year).

Qualifications: This Fellowship is awarded to eligible prospective graduate students who meet one of the "New Americans" criteria, plans to remain in the United States, is younger than 30 years of age, and shows evidence of the attributes quoted in the Soros application materials.

Joseph L. & Vivian E. Steele Fund Architectural Scholarship

Deadline: May 15, 2008

Amount: Varies

Qualifications: The Joseph L. & Vivian E. Steele Fund Architectural Scholarship is intended to assist students who are pursuing an academic program of architecture at the graduate or undergraduate level. The award is based on both merit and financial need. Applicants are invited to submit an initial qualification form, due May 15th, 2008. The Foundation Staff will review the qualification form to determine the student's eligibility. Qualified candidates will be notified of their status and invited to submit a formal application.

The Journyx "Excellence In Project Accounting Philosophy" Essay Scholarship 2008

Deadline: June 1, 2008

Amount: $500

Qualifications: : This scholarship is designed to improve the philosophy and the technology of project accounting. Applicants are asked to write an essay of 1,000 words or less, on one of two accounting topics. Only one essay is accepted per person, which will not be returned to the applicant. Also submit an official academic transcript containing the entrant's spring semester grades for the academic year in progress and a copy of entrant's resume that includes e-mail address, campus address and phone number, student ID number, permanent address and phone number, major and expected graduation date. All application materials must be received by email to scholarship@journyx.com by 5:00pm CST on June 1, 2008. See the Complete Official Rules for all the legalese and even more details.

Hispanic Professional Engineers

Deadline: April 1, 2008

Over $2 Million in scholarships and internships are available to Hispanic students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students may apply for as many scholarships for which they are eligible and there is no fee to apply. The different scholarships vary in terms of qualifications and monies granted, but all require a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the scholarship period. Applicants should also be full time students taking at least 12 class hours as an undergraduate or 9 hours at the graduate level. Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston

Deadline: April 4, 2008

Amount: $1,000

The Institute of Hispanic Culture is offering scholarships to high school (graduating seniors), college, and medical school students. Eligible high school and college students can be pursuing any major. Eligible graduate students need be specializing in a field related to the Hispanic culture. All applicants should be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the U.S.A., residents of the Houston Metropolitan area, and enrolled in an accredited junior college, college, or university in the State of Texas. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to do volunteer work at the Institute's office during the term in which the scholarship is used. Click here to learn more about the eligibility requirements.

Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Scholarship Program

Deadline: April 30, 2008

The Executive Women International (EWI) ASIST Scholarship Program is for non-traditional students who are entering college for the first time or re-training due to changes in the workforce. Ideal applicants are those that have financial need, are socially, economically, or physically challenged adults, or are responsible for small children. Other eligibility requirements are for the applicant to define career goals and objectives, specify the educational requirements to obtain these goals. To be eligible, you need to utilize re-entry programs available through the university, community, and other agencies and reside within the boundaries of a EWI Chapter.

Desk & Derrick Club of Dallas Scholarships for 2008/2009 School Year

Deadline: July 15th, 2008

The Desk and Derrick Club of Dallas is offering scholarships to outstanding college students planning a career in Petroleum, Energy and Allied Industries. Funds are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The awards depend on the qualifications and needs of each student. Eligible students are those who are natives of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, show financial need, and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0. An official transcript, the Desk and Derrick application, current college tuition invoice and book receipts, and a letter to the committee chairman outlining the student’s qualifications and goals are required.
