Bock in Houston

Jerry Bock’s songs have entertained countless theater-goers on Broadway in productions like “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Fiorello!”

For the past seven years, Bock has found a younger fan base right here at the University of Houston.

As a regular contributor to the UH Children’s Theatre Festival, Bock works alongside Sidney Berger, the John and Rebecca Moores Professor in the School of Theatre & Dance. Together, they’ve premiered new productions for eager young theater enthusiasts.

In 1965, Bock received two Tony awards – Best Composer and Best Musical – for “Fiddler on the Roof.” In 1960, he received the Pulitzer Prize for “Fiorello!” His songs also have entertained audiences in Broadway productions such as “She Loves Me” and “The Apple Tree.”

“Seeing young audiences’ reactions to these plays is magical,” Bock says. “I relish the opportunity to write for this festival.”
