Frequently Asked Questions
-
How does a new student register for class at University of Houston?
- Logging in to PeopleSoft
Once a student is admitted to the University of Houston, he/she is issued a PeopleSoft ID number (usually displayed on the student's acceptance letter). The student should log in to http://my.uh.edu using the PeopleSoft ID number and temporary password (student's birthday in MMDDYYYY format). Once the student is logged in, the student will be immediately prompted to change his/her password.
- Orientation & Academic Advising
Freshmen are required to attend a New Student Orientation before enrolling in classes.
Transfer students with 15 or more hours of transferable credit are encouraged, but not required, to attend Orientation. All students must meet with an Academic Advisor before enrolling in classes.
- Students meet with their Academic Advisor at Orientation. If the student attends Orientation, there is no need to set up a separate appointment. If the student does not attend Orientation, he/she will need to contact the appropriate Advisor and set up an appointment prior to enrolling.
- All students are required to fulfill the state requirements for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) before enrolling. More information can be found at the Orientation Web site.
- Freshmen and transfers with less than 30 hours of transferable credit are also required to attempt UH's Math Placement Exam. More information about this requirement can be found at the Orientation Web site.
- Enrolling
Once the student has changed his/her PeopleSoft password, attended Orientation (optional for transfers with 15 or more hours of transferable credit), and met with an Academic Advisor, they can enroll for classes within PeopleSoft.
You can download a PowerPoint demonstration of the enrollment process by clicking here.
- How does a current student enroll for class at the University of Houston?
- The Dean of Students Office recommends that all students (both those new to the University and those who are currently attending) meet with their Academic Advisor before enrolling for the next semester.
- After meeting with their Advisor, students can register within PeopleSoft.
- What makes an undergraduate student full-time?
All undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours during a fall or spring semester, eight semester hours during Summer II or III, and four semester hours during Summer I or IV are classified as carrying a full-time course load. Some agencies outside the University may set different guidelines for full-time status and satisfactory academic progress. Students should comply with such guidelines to the extent that they do not contradict University purposes and regulations. Selected colleges and departments may have more restrictive or more permissive policies than the University policies. Click here to view more information about course loads.
- How many courses can or should an undergraduate student take a semester?
An undergraduate student should recognize that course work in college will require a significant amount of work outside the classroom - traditionally recommended at 2-3 hours for every hour in class. Click here to find out more about the University's course load recommendations.
- Does a student have to declare a major right away? What if the student doesn’t know what he/she wants to major in?

Students who choose not to declare a major at the point of admission to the University of Houston will be offered assistance through UScholars that will help them later make an informed decision about a major field of study. All UScholars students must declare a major by the beginning of their junior year (60 credit hours), if they have not already done so.
