CLASS welcomes new Dean

On February 1, Dr. Antonio D. Tillis joined the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) from the College of Charleston where he was dean of the School of Languages, Culture and World Affairs and professor of Hispanic Studies. Dr. Tillis received his B.A. in Spanish from Vanderbilt University, M.A. in Spanish literature from Howard University, and his Ph.D. in Latin American literature with an Afro-Hispanic emphasis from the University of Missouri. read more

CLASS researcher receives grant from U.S. Department of Labor to examine LGBT workplace discrimination

A 2014 Executive Order signed by President Obama bans federal contractors from discriminating in the workplace based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Dr. Amanda Baumle, associate professor of sociology, and two collaborators from the University of Massachusetts, have been awarded a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to examine how well contractors are following the 2014 anti-discrimination order. read more

Study suggests polling is still best predictor of election outcomes

Donald Trump’s surprising election as president of the United States was viewed by some people as evidence that electoral polling no longer works, but researchers report they have developed models using global polling data that can correctly predict up to 90 percent of election outcomes around the world. Dr. Ryan Kennedy, associate professor of political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, is lead author on the paper published the journal Science. read more

New search committee training encourages faculty diversity to reflect student body

Dr. Steven Woods, Search Committee chair and professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, used new faculty diversity search training to augment his hiring process as well as increase the diversity of his applicant pool. read more

HHP doctoral student Bridgette Rooney featured by NASA

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Health and Human Performance doctoral student and NASA intern Bridgette Rooney was recently featured on NASA's website in an article titled, "Bridgette Rooney: The Military, Medicine, and Microbiology". The article profiled Bridgette's journey from the military to medicine to studying exercise immunology at HHP's Laboratory of Integrated Physiology under the guidance of Dr. Richard Simpson. read more

Master of Public of Administration Program honors 2017 Public Officials of the Year

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Master of Public Administration Program’s annual Public Official of the Year Ceremony recognizes Houston-area public officials who solve large and small problems to meet the daily needs of the citizens they serve. To honor the work of these elected and appointed public servants, the program hosts an annual luncheon to recognize the individuals selected as Public Officials of the Year. This year, four winners were chosen from a wide-range of nominees representing the full-spectrum of public administration work. read more

Friends of Women’s Studies to host 20th annual Table Talk

The Friends of Women’s Studies (FWS) at the University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences presents the 20th Annual Table Talk Luncheon at 11a.m., Wednesday, March 22 at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel. This lively lunch brings together a dynamic and diverse group of Houston women in a format that builds connections in support of the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program at the University of Houston. read more

CLASS to host National Council for Black Studies Conference

University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences African American Studies Program will host the 41st National Council for Black Studies Conference (NCBS) on March 8-12. NCBS is the leading organization of Black Studies professionals in the world. For 40 years, the organization’s members have been at the forefront of driving the development of Black/Africana Studies as a respected academic discipline. read more

African American Studies Program celebrates Black History Month

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences African American Studies Program is celebrating Black History Month with a myriad of events to mark the observance. Activities included a screening of a documentary on civil rights hero and congressional leader John Lewis, and a book discussion and signing of The Wilmington Ten. read more
