September 6: Book signing by Dr. Elizabeth Farfan-Santos

Dr. Elizabeth Farfan-Santos, assistant professor of anthropology, will discuss her new book Black Bodies, Black Rights: The Politics of Quilombolismo in Contemporary Brazil at a book-signing event at the Brazos Book store. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and is presented in partnership with the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) and the Department of Comparative Cultural Studies. read more

Health & Human Performance is hosting a distinguished leader series, and the next speaker is Dr. Ping Zhou of the University of Texas Health Science Center Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The African American Studies Program will host Dr. Evelyn M. Simien, associate professor of Political Science and Institute for Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut at 1 p.m. in Agnes Arnold Hall, room 210. Dr. Simien will discuss her third book, Historic Firsts: How Symbolic Empowerment Changes U.S. Politics. read more

September 22: Living Archives: Dreamer Power: The Next Generation of Latina Leaders

The Barbara Karkabi Living Archives Series features interviews with Houston women on diverse topics which are videotaped and collected in the Carey C. Shuart Women's Archive at the UH Library, Special Collections. The theme for 2016 is Women & Power. The event will be from 11:30 – 1 p.m. at the Rockwell Pavilion. read more

The African American Studies Program will host Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, assistant professor of African American History at the University of Florida at 11:30 a.m. in Agnes Arnold Room 210. Dr. Kendi will discuss his latest book, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. read more

October 27: McGovern Lecture series welcomes Dr. Mark Anthony Neal

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences has invited noted professor Dr. Mark Anthony Neal to give the 2016 Dr. John P. McGovern Lecture in Family, Health, and Human Values on at UC Theater. Dr. Neal is professor of African & African American Studies and the founding director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture and Entrepreneurship (CADCE) at Duke University. His discussion topic is Black Masculinities in American Culture and will be presented in collaboration with the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program (WGSS) as part of its ongoing Masculinities Initiatives. read more
