CLASS to offer country’s first PhD program in Spanish with a concentration in Creative Writing

Next fall, CLASS will begin offering a unique Ph.D. program, and the woman at the helm is a CLASS alumna, Dr. Cristina Rivera Garza, a Distinguished Professor of Hispanic Studies and Creative Writing. The University of Houston is the only university in the country to offer a Ph.D. program in Spanish with a concentration in Creative Writing. read more

Valenti students lay foundation for student-run firm

Students at the Valenti School of Communication are discovering what it takes to launch an integrated communication firm, firsthand. In a special interest class led by Professor Priscilla Tinsley, the semester began with a Powerhouse-sized goal: laying the groundwork for the first student-run communication firm at UH. The school has produced a video describing the firm’s goals and purpose which is available for viewing here. read more

CLASS faculty member serves as translator for 2016 Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan

The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 was recently awarded to singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and a CLASS faculty member who worked with Dylan to translate his music into Italian is proud to have participated in Dylan’s iconic career. Dr. Alessandro Carrera, director of Italian Studies, is Bob Dylan’s Italian translator. read more

Collaborative work between CLASS and College of the Arts students is published

The Cougar recently ran an article about a workshop offered to students that was a collaboration between Creative Writing professor and graphic novelist Dr. Mat Johnson, and artist and professor of painting Dr. Michael Ray Charles. The students just celebrated the publication of their collective comic book, titled Kolache. read more

CLASS history professors awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities

Nancy Beck Young, professor of history, and Leandra Zarnow, assistant professor of history, have been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to host a summer seminar for college professors in June 2017, “Gender, Party Politics, and the State.” Working in conjunction with the Center for Public History, they will bring sixteen college professors to campus next summer for a week of intensive study. read more

Graduate student researcher examines benefits of popular dieting program

Findings from a small study by Health and Human Performances’ Laboratory of Integrative Physiology suggests that people who followed the Paleo diet for only eight weeks experienced positive effects on heart health. Chad Dolan, a graduate student researcher, authored the study. read more

Student spotlight: Student government senator sets sights on Supreme Court

When she was 15-years-old, Leen Basharat received devastating news. Her father was suffering from serious health issues, and his mounting medical bills were ruining the family’s finances. She worked multiple jobs to not only help her family, but to save for college. Today, she is a CLASS student pursuing her undergraduate degree with her sights on one day serving as the first Arab American on the U.S. Supreme Court. read more
