Rockefeller Foundation selects Lindahl-led project for July 2014 Bellagio Center conference

The Rockefeller Foundation has identified the research of Dr. Carl Lindahl on how people survive and cope during major calamities as an “impact-oriented solution to a critical global problem.” The Foundation has expressed that recognition by providing Dr. Lindahl with the use of the Bellagio Center. Creative Writing Associate Professor Mat Johnson’s twitter feed, @mat_johnson, is spotlighted as one of 25 hot happenings in Houston this summer by the Houston Chronicle.

Robert Zaretsky, professor of history, wrote the op-ed article Why the French love a parade published in the International Herald Tribune and on the New York Times’ website.

The StarTalk Texas Teacher Program at the University of Houston, hosted by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and funded by a federal grant, received significant media attention during its two-week run in July on the UH campus.

August 2-11 — Houston Shakespeare Festival
Each summer, the School of Theatre & Dance produces two Shakespeare plays in repertory performed at Miller Outdoor Theatre.  The 2013 productions are Antony and Cleopatra, directed by Leah C. Gardiner and As You Like It, directed by Marc Masterson. Guest actors include Crystal Dickinson (Broadway: Clybourne Park and Enron), Brandon Dirden (Broadway: Prelude to a Kiss and Enron), Seth Gilliam (MTV’s Teen Wolf and HBO’s The Wire) and Chris Hutchison (Comedy Central’s Chapelle’s Show and ABC’s All My Children.) Both Gardiner and Dirden are recent Obie Award-winners for Off-Broadway productions. Click here to view the season schedule. This is a free event.

August 17 — Feast: A Dinner Series featuring artist Gabriel Martinez and hosted by Jim Petersen
Blaffer Art Museum, Texas Monthly magazne, Uchi restaurant, and Whole Foods grocery chain have joined forces to create an unforgettable private dinner series inspired by the upcoming exhibition at Blaffer Art Museum Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art opening September 6, 2013.

September 6 — Public opening and reception for Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art exhibition
