The Center for Mexican American Studies marks its 40th anniversary on the University of Houston campus in the fall of 2012. I feel privileged to have been the Center's director since 1980.

Dr. MindiolaDr. Tatcho Mindiola is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Mexican American Studies. During his tenure as the Center's director, he has developed it into one of the premiere academic programs of its type in the nation.

McGovern Lectureship awarded to Dr. Alexandra Stern

Prof. Alex Stern

Noted Medical Historian Alexandra Stern of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor will deliver the 2012 John P. McGovern Endowed Lecture in Family, Health and Human Values at 7 p.m., Monday, April 9 at the Rockwell Pavilion in the M.D. Anderson Library.

 

Stern will present "Don't Reduce Me to a Label: Disability Rights, Genetic Diagnosis, and Social Values." She will speak on the origins of genetic counseling in the 1940s and discuss how the first generation of medical geneticists stigmatized people with disabilities, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for empowerment and activism. read more.
