Dr. Guadalupe San Miguel, Jr., professor in the Department of History, has been elected a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association, the highest honor the Association bestows on scholars who research and publish Texas History.

San Miguel, Jr., sees his ability to pursue scholarly research on the important topic of Mexican American history as a tribute to the supportive environment he’s experienced at the University of Houston.

“This award is deeply appreciated since it is an acknowledgement from my peers of the important work I have done in Texas history,” he explains. “I am thrilled for this honor and look forward to many more years of researching and publishing in Texas history.”

Dr. San Miguel, Jr.’s election to the Fellows group is significant, he says, in that “the oldest professional association of mainstream historians has recognized the importance of my work and how it has enriched the history of the state. It is another example of the growing acceptance of the field of Mexican American history in this state and it strengthens the case for the need to develop Mexican American Studies in all Texas public schools.”

His election was announced at the Fellows Luncheon and Presentation of Awards at the 2018 Annual Meeting in San Marcos, Texas, on March 9.
