CLASS students earn U.S. State Department scholarships to study abroad

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences recognizes two students who were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State to study abroad and better prepare themselves to thrive in the global economy. Jessica Espaillat and Adriene Preston will travel to Tokyo, Japan and Cairo, Egypt respectively. read more

CLASS African American Studies Program prepares to celebrate Black History Month

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences African American Studies Program is gearing up with festivities in February to celebrate black history month with a myriad of events to mark the observance. Scheduled activities include a screening of a documentary on civil rights hero and congressional leader John Lewis, and the presentation of a documentary about the World Festival of Negro Arts. read more

CLASS National Endowment for the Humanities Award Recipients

In February 2015, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences hosted the Regional National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants workshop. The goal of the two-day workshop was to provide insights and strategies for submitting strong applications. As a result, CLASS professors have successfully captured some of those very competitive grants. read more

CLASS student saw college as a ‘blank slate’ to become a better, well-rounded student

As the child of immigrants from China, Winni Zhang is a first generation college student. Her parents sacrificed a lot to come to the U.S. so that she could have the opportunities America had to offer. In return, they expected her to earn high grades – they felt her grades were a reflection of the future she would have. When she got to UH she learned the skills necessary to make the grades she’d always desired, as well as how to get involved on campus and feel fulfilled. read more
