United Health Foundation, University of Houston join forces to improve public health

The United Health Foundation has awarded the University of Houston a $2 million grant to jumpstart a long-term, sustainable effort for preventing and treating obesity, type 2 diabetes and, eventually, other ailments faced by people in two of Houston’s underserved communities. Fellows at UH’s recently launched HEALTH Research Institute, Dr. Dan O’Connor, professor of health and human performance, and Dr. Ezemenari Obasi, associate professor in the college of education, received the three-year grant. ACSM awards research grant to Dr. Christopher Arellano

Health and human performance faculty member Dr. Christopher Arellano has won a grant from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Foundation to explore the role of muscle in stabilizing movement. ACSM funded Dr. Arellano’s proposal titled, “Stabilizing Properties of Muscle” through its research endowment grant. read more

Dr. Daphne Hernandez wins USDA grant to prepare students for careers in obesity and nutrition

Health and human performance faculty member Dr. Daphne Hernandez has won a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to mentor and train undergraduate students for careers in obesity and nutrition. The $281,475 grant will cultivate and refine student skills needed to enter the food, nutrition, and agricultural science workforce through basic and applied research and experiential learning opportunities, along with professional development and leadership opportunities. Dr. Hernandez is the principal investigator for the project, and HHP faculty members Dr. Craig Johnston and Claudia Scott are co-investigators on the project. Dr. Demetrius Pearson, associate professor of health and human performance, is a contributor to the book “Black Cowboys in the American West: On the Range, on the Stage, behind the Badge” which has won the Ray and Pat Browne Award for Best Edited Collection in Popular Culture and American Culture. read more

Bianca Salinas earns 2017 National Summer Scholarship to study in France

French major Bianca Salinas was recently awarded the 2017 National Summer Scholarship of the American Society of the French Academic Palms. The society offers a national scholarship of $4,000 for summer study-abroad at the high school and university level. The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to French language studies as well as an interest in Francophone cultures. read more

Students attend 58th Annual Assembly at the U.S. Air Force Academy

Over spring break, the political science department sent three students to attend the 58th Annual Assembly at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. This year’s conference, “Inside the Wire: American Security and Cyber Warfare,” examined the cyber domain and related issues for U.S. national security . Mah-Noor Ahmed, David Anthony Martinez, and Gaby Calderon interacted with students from across the nation as well as speakers, such as Richard Clarke (former National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism) and Admiral Michael Rogers (Commander, United States Cyber Command).

CLASS offers numerous faculty-led opportunities for students to travel abroad

With the recent announcement of a University of Houston partnership with the Mexican government, the university has further strengthened its commitment to providing opportunities for students to study, research, and live in international settings. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences provides several faculty-led opportunities for students to ‘earn a stamp in their passports’ and travel abroad. read more

Hundreds turnout for the 20th Annual Table Talk Luncheon

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program presented the 20th annual Friends of Women’s Studies Table Talk 2017 on March 22 at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel. More than 600 individuals attended the event, which celebrated the accomplishments of Houston women over the past 20 years. The lively lunch honored 60 Houston women of accomplishment from diverse fields and backgrounds, in a format that builds connections. One at each table, the conversationalists shared their life experiences and stories with the guests seated with them. Over the past two decades, more than 800 Houston women leaders have been honored. “Table Talk is a chance for women to exchange information on what worked and what didn’t in building their careers and families and making a success of their lives in a fast changing environment,” said Dr. Elizabeth Gregory, director of the Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies Program and a professor of English at UH. “It’s really a folklore event. Women are not trying to impress each other with what they do. They’re exchanging vital information on how to negotiate the changing roles of women by sharing their own stories.” read more

Digital humanities allows CLASS researchers to utilize cutting-edge technology

When traditional humanities intersect with modern technology, the result is digital humanities. This burgeoning research method allows academics to use digital tools in their pursuit of humanities exploration and inquiries. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences hosted a digital humanities conference last month. At the conference, attendees discussed the digital humanities projects currently underway at UH, and learned about the numerous digital humanities resources available at the university. read more
