Sept. 1 - 6: Last days of Candice Breitz: The Woods exhibition at Blaffer Art Museum
The Woods delivers a trilogy of video installations exploring the performance of childhood and capturing adolescent actors on and off camera working in the entertainment industries in Los Angeles (Hollywood), Mumbai (Bollywood) and Lagos (Nollywood.)

Sept. 4 through Oct. 18th
As part of 45 Days: Explore the Arts, the UH Arts Initiative collaborates with the Houston Arts Alliance and local arts organizations to bring greater visibility to Houston’s arts scene. Sept. 5: Food for Thought Speaker Series – Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food by Dr. Jeffrey M. Pilcher, Professor of History at the University of Toronto
This lecture will show how Mexican Americans helped to make Mexican food global. It will examine differing historical perceptions of Mexican food, as well as the contemporary struggle between globalization and national sovereignty represented by the clash of fast food and Mexican regional cuisines. 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Honors College Commons in M.D. Anderson Library.

Sept. 5
Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts presents the first installment of The Gulf Coast Reading Series for the 2014-2015 season, featuring Aja Gabel, Michelle Mariano and Christopher Brean Murray. The reading begins at 7pm at Rudyard’s, 2010 Waugh Dr. Houston, Texas 77006 .

Sept. 6: Half-time Show featuring Daniel Bernard Roumain, Spirit of Houston and Grambling State Univ. marching bands
Mitchell Center Artist in Residence Daniel Bernard Roumain, the University of Houston Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band and the Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band present a half-time spectacular during the second home game in the new TDECU stadium at the University of Houston. Game starts at 7 p.m.

Sept. 10: Mitchell Artist Lecture: Laurie Anderson
The annual Mitchell Artist Lecture features individuals emblematic of artistic collaboration and innovation who lead a discussion on the power and potential of interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center’s 2014 speaker is Laurie Anderson, who is recognized worldwide as a groundbreaking leader in the use of technology in the arts and as one of today’s premier performance artists. 6 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. lecture in the Moores Opera House.

Sept. 18: The Main Event: Lucille Tenazas
The UH Graphics Alumni Partnership (UH GAP) presents its annual Main Event lecture. This year’s presenter is Lucille Tenazas, founder and principal of Tenazas Design, a communication graphics and design firm with projects in the cultural, educational and non-profit sector. She is the recipient of the 2013 American Institute of Grapic Arts Medal, a former president of the AIGA, and the recipient of the 2002 National Design Award in Communications Design from The Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. 6 – 9 p.m. in the Athletics & Alumni Center, 3100 Cullen.

Sept. 30: Book Reading: The Virgin of Guadalupe and the Conversos: Uncovering Hidden Influences from Spain to Mexico by Maria-Theresa Hernandez
Dr. Hernandez unmasks the secret lives of “conversos” and “judaizantes” and their likely influence on the Catholic Church in the New World. The terms “converso” and “judaizante” are often used for descendants of Spanish Jews (the Sephardi, or Sefarditas as they are sometimes called), who converted under duress to Christianity in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. 7:00 pm at Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St. 77005-1451.

CLASS Students in the Media

The Men of Moores, an a capella choral ensemble made up of undergrads at the Moores School of Music, recently recorded their first single - a cover of Radiohead’s 1992 hit “Creep.” They were featured on the Houston Matters program, The Men of Moores: Choral Group Transforms Pop Songs into A Capella.

Patrick Parker, a doctoral student in music, was featured in the Houston Chronicle article, Baroque appeals to doctoral student. Parker is spear heading a new musical group called the Houston Young Artist Collective.

CLASS Faculty in the Media

The Long Shrift, the second produced play by Robert Boswell, professor of creative writing, had its world premiere off-Broadway July 13 – Aug. 23, 2104. The production of the Texas-set drama was also the stage directing debut of film star James Franco. Several media outlets wrote about and reviewed the production.

KPRC’s Houston Newsmakers recently aired a segment about the ongoing border crisis. Jeronimo Cortina, assistant professor in the Center for Mexican American Studies, was a panelist on the program titled, Houston Newsmakers July 27: Border crisis solutions; Liftoff Houston.

Research conducted by Quian Lu, director of the Health Psychology Lab, was recently featured on the NBC News website in an article titled, Writing Therapy Helps Chinese-Speaking Breast Cancer Survivors. Lu’s research was also on the FOX program, Asian Connection.

Luis Salinas, lecturer in Sociology, discussed how the social landscape of Latinos in the U.S. is rapidly changing, especially when it comes to wealth on the FOX program, Hola Houston.

Research conducted by Candice Alfano, director of the Sleep and Anxiety Center, was featured on the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System website’s article, DoD and civilian academics team up to combat child stress.

Courtney Jones, adjunct professor of dance, was featured in the Houston Chronicle article, Veteran dancer enjoys performing on classroom stage as UH instructor. The article details how she got into dance, her work experience, and how she became a member of the CLASS faculty.

The Houston Press ran an article announcing the productions that will be a part of this year’s Houston Shakespeare Festival. The article is titled, A King and Two Gents Are This Year's Offerings at the Houston Shakespeare Festival. The Houston Chronicle also ran an article about the Houston Shakespeare Festival titled, Houston Shakespeare Festival turns 40.

Jim Johnson, director of the School of Theatre and Dance, discussed the anniversary of the Houston Shakespeare Festival on the Houston Matters program, Year Round School, Films, and the Houston Shakespeare Festival: Houston Matters for Thursday, July 30, 2014.

“Funny Once: Stories,” a book published by Antonya Nelson, professor of English, was recently reviewed by the Houston Press in the article, Book Check: Funny Once, by Antonya Nelson.

Lacy Johnson, director of academic initiatives at the Cynthia Mitchell Center for the Arts, recently wrote a memoir titled, “The Other Side.”  The San Antonio Current reviewed the book in the article,  ‘The Other Side’ Tackles the Impossible: Writing about trauma.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 20 percent of Hispanics in Harris County are 16 to 31 years old. Houston Matters recently discussed why marketers want to target this audience on the segment, Why Marketers Want to Target Latino Millennials in Houston, and Discussing Hispanic Culture in H-TownNicolas Kanellos, director of Arte Publico Press, was a guest on the program.

Elizabeth Warren, who graduated from UH with a bachelor's in communication disorders, currently serves as a senator from Massachusetts. The New Jersey Newsroom article, Elizabeth Warren May Be Going Against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Election, discusses her future political aspirations.
   
Veronica Flores-Paniagua Alumna Veronica Flores-Paniagua earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1988 and is now the Outlook Editor for the Houston Chronicle and a member of the newspaper’s editorial board. As outlook editor, she manages the pages in the paper that serve as a public forum for conversation and debate between journalists and non-journalists about ideas and issues that are important in our community. Annalee Jefferies "The Old Friends," the production that kicked off the "Alley Theatre @ UH" season, featured alum Annalee Jefferies. An article about her return to UH appeared in the Houston Chronicle titled, Performing for Alley at UH brings flood of memories for actress.  
   
Kiara Feliciano Kiara Feliciano, who graduated from the School of Theatre & Dance in May, was part of this year’s Houston Shakespeare Festival’s cast – juggling three roles in two plays. She is featured in the Broadway World article, BWW Interviews: Actress Kiara Feliciano Talks Two Gentlemen and the Lady of the Houston Shakespeare Festival.
