October 5 2nd Annual Houston LibroFEST: Celebraring Latino Literature and Culture in the Bayou City
A book and arts festival that highlights Hispanic writers and showcases the vibrant culture of Houston's Latino community co-sponsored by Arte Público Press that will be held from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Central Library Plaza in downtown Houston, 500 McKinney St. 77002. October 14 — Barbara Karkabi Living Archives: Women's Activism, Then & Now
A 6 – 7:30 p.m. panel discussion with State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, longest serving African-American woman in the state legislature in Texas History; Poppy Northcutt, NASA mission control alumna and an organizer of the 1977 National Women's Conference; and others moderated by public affairs strategist Nancy Sims, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science. The event in the Rockwell Pavilion of the M.D. Anderson Library is free to students and members of the Friends of Women's Studies and $10 for general public admission. RSVP to wgss@uh.edu

October 24: — "How Regulation Makes Markets in American Health Care" by Prof. Daniel Carpenter of Harvard University – the 2013 McGovern Award Lecturer in Health and Family Values
Dr. Carpenter is the Allie S. Freed Professor of Government and Director of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University. His lecture will be from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the UH Rockwell Pavilion in the M.D. Anderson Library.

October 27: — Jewish Women's University for a Day
The UH Jewish Studies Program in partnership with the Rice University's Program in Jewish Studies and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York presents "Jewish Women's University for a Day," an adult learning program celebrating women and Judaism with study sessions. The keynote address, "Women of Value: Is the Bible a Patriarchal Text?," will deliver Dr. Amy Kalmanofsky of the Jewish Theological Seminary. October 30 — University of Houston/Universität Leipzig Exchange Scholarship application deadline

Jeremy Underwood, a graduate student in the School of Art, and his sculptures were featured in the KHOU-CBS11 report, Houston artist creates beach trash sculptures along waterways.

Creative Writing graduate students and Karyna McGlynn and Zachary Martin, as well as Blaffer Art Museum curatorial fellow Amy Powell, were interviewed by the Houston Chronicle for the article Gulf Coast: A merger of literature and art about the merger of Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts and Art Lies magazine.

Clinical assistant professor Scot Pott of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders is featured in the Houston Chronicle article, In a silent classroom, students learn unique language, about UH being the only Texas university of offering a bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpreting. On its chron.com Website, the newspaper also ran the Hands-on Skills photo gallery featuring Professor Pott and several students.

Elizabeth Gregory, director of the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, is quoted in the KIAH-CW39 report, National birth rates at an all-time low. Dr. Gregory also wrote the opinion article, Women's suffrage Texas-style, published in the Houston Chronicle.

Brown Foundation Professor of Hispanic Studies Nicolás Kanellos is quoted in the McClatchy wire service article PBS series on Latino Americans is long overdue, they say that ran in the Kansas City Star.

La Nación interviewed Peter Norton, psychology associate professor and director of the Anxiety Disorder Clinic, for the Spanish-language question-and-answer article, Los trastornos de ansiedad se curan.

The Education News blog posted an interview with Donald J. Foss, professor of psychology, about his new book Your Complete Guide to College Success: How to Study Smart, Achieve Your Goals and Enjoy Campus Life.

Garth Jowett, a professor in the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication, spent part of Friday the 13th talking about superstitions on the Great Day Houston show with host Debra Duncan.

The Jewish Studies Program's co-sponsorship of Jewish Women's University for a Day event was highlighted in the HereHouston.com post, JTS to hold first "Jewish Women's University for a Day" in Houston.

A write-up about the Moores Opera Center hosted its annual fundraiser "What's Opera, Duck?" at the Mucky Duck nightclub appeared in the Examiner newspaper.

Nandita V. Berry
Nandita V. Berry, a 1991 graduate who double majored in economics and political science, was elected by the University of Houston System Board of Regents to serve as that body's vice chair for the 2014 fiscal year.
   
Elvin Hayes
Elvin Hayes, a speech communication graduate, participated in the induction of his former Coach Guy Lewis into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was interviewed by KRIV-FOX26 about being recruiting by Coach Lewis to be one of the first two African-American basketball players in UH history.

Melissa Edwards, a summa cum laude art history graduate, has been appointed chair of the CLASS Dean's Advisory Board.

Husband and wife CLASS alums Meredith Philipp and Raffi Tcholakian, hosted at their family-owned Phoenicia Specialty Foods' MKT Bar the first "pop-up food event" organized and hosted by Christine Ha, a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program and the winner of Season 3 of MasterChef cooking competition television show on Fox. Ms. Philipp is a member of the CLASS Dean's Advisory Board.
