October 5 — 2nd Annual Houston LibroFEST: Celebraring Latino Literature and Culture in the Bayou City
A book and arts festival that highlights Hispanic writers and showcases the vibrant culture of Houston's Latino community co-sponsored by Arte Público Press that will be held from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Central Library Plaza in downtown Houston, 500 McKinney St. 77002. October 14 — Barbara Karkabi Living Archives: Women's Activism, Then & Now
A 6 – 7:30 p.m. panel discussion with State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, longest serving African-American woman in the state legislature in Texas History; Poppy Northcutt, NASA mission control alumna and an organizer of the 1977 National Women's Conference; and others moderated by public affairs strategist Nancy Sims, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science. The event in the Rockwell Pavilion of the M.D. Anderson Library is free to students and members of the Friends of Women's Studies and $10 for general public admission. RSVP to wgss@uh.edu

October 24: — "How Regulation Makes Markets in American Health Care" by Prof. Daniel Carpenter of Harvard University – the 2013 McGovern Award Lecturer in Health and Family Values
Dr. Carpenter is the Allie S. Freed Professor of Government and Director of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University. His lecture will be from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the UH Rockwell Pavilion in the M.D. Anderson Library.
October 27: — Jewish Women's University for a Day
The UH Jewish Studies Program in partnership with the Rice University's Program in Jewish Studies and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York presents "Jewish Women's University for a Day," an adult learning program celebrating women and Judaism with study sessions. The keynote address, "Women of Value: Is the Bible a Patriarchal Text?," will deliver Dr. Amy Kalmanofsky of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Nandita V. Berry, a 1991 graduate who double majored in economics and political science, was elected by the University of Houston System Board of Regents to serve as that body's vice chair for the 2014 fiscal year.

Elvin Hayes, a speech communication graduate, participated in the induction of his former Coach Guy Lewis into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was interviewed by KRIV-FOX26 about being recruiting by Coach Lewis to be one of the first two African-American basketball players in UH history.

Husband and wife CLASS alums Meredith Philipp and Raffi Tcholakian, hosted at their family-owned Phoenicia Specialty Foods' MKT Bar the first "pop-up food event" organized and hosted by Christine Ha, a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program and the winner of Season 3 of MasterChef cooking competition television show on Fox. Ms. Philipp is a member of the CLASS Dean's Advisory Board.
