Summary: JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN XIA EMPIRE is the epic directorial debut of Lu Wei, co-writer of the modern classic FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE. It stars Ni Dahong, the magnificent actor from TO LIVE (directed by Chan Kaige). In medieval China tells the story of a mother searching for her infant, who was kidnapped by warriors. Soldiers are dispatched to collect babies who they will mold into warriors. After losing one of the boys, the soldiers' commander conscripts a pregnant woman. After she gives birth to a boy, he claims the child and leaves her alone in the desert. Unexpectedly, she follows the soldiers to take care of her son, earning her the respect and admiration of the commander.
