Recycled Paper, Incentives, and Closed Loop
Recycling at UH

Incentives are now available to UH departments for purchasing recycle paper. These purchases are a part of the University’s closed loop paper recycling program which helps support green initiatives university wide.

The University of Houston is “one of a few universities in the country” implementing a closed loop paper recycling system, Today’s Business Solutions President Robert Jimenez said.

UH and its departments are supporting the program, and collecting more white paper in UH recycle bins will help lower the price of the recycled paper for office use, Jimenez explained.
The closed loop recycling program allows paper at UH to be collected, sold, and then processed into 30%, 50%, or 100% recycled paper content at the Boise paper mill in Jackson, Alabama. The recycled paper can then be purchased as office paper for UH departments through Today’s Business Solutions.

The recycling program partners, such as Evergreen Fiber, work with the university to help improve its recycling program. Relevant adjustments are expected to increase collections and revenue to the university. These funds could help support and expand the recycling program in the future.

Two incentives are currently available for eligible recycled paper purchases between April 1, 2010 and September 30, 2010.

Recycled paper purchases must contain a minimum of 30% recycled paper content. Paper with 50% and 100% recycled content is also available.

The first incentive is a 5% rebate of the $100 or more recycled paper purchased from Today’s Business Solutions during a six month purchasing cycle.

The second incentive awards the four departments that purchase the most recycled paper from Today’s Business Solutions with 20,000 HP points from a HP rewards program, which can be used to purchase a variety of items. The HP rewards program rules can be found here.

Buying recycled paper from Today’s Business Solutions helps keep track of the total amount of recycled paper purchased at the University of Houston. In addition, this data will help calculate incentive rebates.

1. Go to www.uh.edu/purchasing and click the Today’s Business Solutions icon or go to www.tbstx.com

2. Login to the Today’s Business Solutions website (To request a user name and password fill out the online form under FAQ titled “User Name or Password Request.” Leave “PIN#” and “Account#” blank if you don’t know them.)

3. Go to the Shopping Lists tab and click on the “Coog’s Top Picks” link for frequently used deeply discounted supplies.
