Grace Deal Wins Earth Week Drawing for Foldable Bicycle

Grace Deal Bike Winner on Rock WallAfter participating in Earth Week events in April, UH arts student Grace Deal is the lucky winner of a brand new foldable bicycle. Deal will claim the prize in the fall semester.

“I feel like I never win anything, so I was really excited to find out I’d won the drawing,” said Deal. “My obvious reaction was to text all my friends and brag about it.”

Students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to enter the Office of Sustainability’s drawing for the bicycle by participating in the many events that went on during Earth Week April 15-22. Deal participated in the Walk Down Sustainability Lane event hosted by Student Housing and Residential Life. During the event, which took place on Earth Day, April 22, guests could visit the different campus residence halls and participate in sustainability-related activities.

Deal loves nature and believes in sustainable living, so when she learned about the Walk Down Sustainability Lane event, she jumped at the chance to participate.

“I’m really into nature. During the summer, I work for an outdoor education program, and I grow a lot of my own vegetables and other plants back home in Ohio,” said Deal. “Earth Day is definitely one of my favorite days, and I wanted to do something cool to celebrate it. One of my friends told me there was vegan ice cream in the lobby of Cougar Village I, and I ended up doing three of the other activities.”

Now that she’s won the foldable bike, Deal said she plans to make good use of it when she returns to UH for the fall semester.

“I’m going to ride this bike everywhere,” she said. “I’m constantly lugging stuff from my room to the Fine Arts Building. The bike’s going to make things a lot easier.”
