Freshman Admissions Criteria

Want to know your chances of getting in to the University of Houston before you apply? Here's some information about how we make our admission decisions. Please note that certain UH majors and programs have additional admission criteria, which are listed below.

Automatic Admission

Freshman applicants who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class will be admitted automatically.

Regular Admissions

It’s not too early to start preparing for college admissions. In fact, now is the best time to take the SAT/ACT and get your paperwork in order. Complete an admissions application along with all required documents (fee, test score and high school transcript) no later than February 1, 2010, and you will be reviewed for admission under these circumstances:

  • If your admissions file is complete by February 1, 2010, and you rank in the top 11-20 percent of your high school class, congratulations– you are admitted.*
  • If your admissions file is complete by February 1, 2010, and you rank in the 21-50 percent of your high school class with SAT of 1000 (critical reading and math) or ACT composite of 21, congratulations – you are admitted.*
  • If your admissions file is complete after February 1, 2010, or you attend a school that doesn't rank, you will be considered for admission under our individual/holistic review process.  Holistic admission includes first-generation college attendance, socioeconomic background, extent and rigor of your high school curriculum, special talents, abilities or awards earned, family responsibilities, leadership activities, public service and extracurricular activities.

Don’t wait!

Students applying after February 1, 2010, are subject to individual review, which may not guarantee admission except to those students in the top 10 percent. If you have questions, please contact us at admissions@uh.edu.

How to apply

Apply online using the Apply Texas Application at www.applytexas.org.  Submit your $50 nonrefundable application via credit card online or mail a check/money order including your name and date of birth.  Submit either SAT or ACT scores and official transcripts via mail or electronically.

Check your admission status in your myUH account.

All mailed application fees and transcripts should be sent to:

University of Houston Office of Admissions

* The following colleges and departments require a higher overall class rank and SAT or ACT scores: Hines College of Architecture, Bauer College of Business and the Cullen College of Engineering. The Moores Shool of Music requires an additional application and an audition. Visit our main admissions pages for more information. Applicants from non-accredited high schools, GED graduates and home school students are subject to different admission requirements. Please refer to the UH Academic Catalog webpages for specific details.

Individual Review

If you do not meet the requirements for Automatic Admission, or if you are home-schooled or earned a GED or attended a high school that does not rank its students, our admissions counselors will review your application separately. In reviewing individual applications, we consider such additional factors as:

  • first-generation college attendance
  • socio-economic background
  • extent and rigor of your high school curriculum
  • special talents, abilities or awards earned
  • family responsibilities
  • leadership activities
  • public service
  • extracurricular activities

You are welcome to submit any additional material that would strengthen your application, such as an especially strong letter of recommendation or a persuasive statement explaining your special circumstances.
