INS rarely authorizes off-campus employment, and there are few jobs available on campus. Therefore, a financial sponsor is needed to finance your education. Please note that F-2 students are not eligible for employment. International Student Scholar Services Office has more information on employment for international students.
Colleges and departments at the University offer various types of graduate fellowships. Contact your perspective graduate college or department about qualifications to obtain a fellowship.
Students employed in a graduate student appointment must be enrolled full-time (a minimum of 9 semester hours of graduate credit during the long semesters and six graduate credit hours during the summer). There are five graduate student appointment titles: Teaching Fellow, Teaching Assistant, Instructional Assistant, Research Assistant and Graduate Assistant.
To be eligible for a graduate assistantship, students must have an undergraduate degree or its equivalent, must be admitted to a graduate program, and should normally be prepared to work full-time toward the degree. Non-native speakers of English employed in instructional roles must have achieved a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL, or a score of at least 220 on the Test of Spoken English, or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL. Appointments are made by the college dean, based on department recommendations. Refer to the 'Know-It Graduate Resource Guide' for more details about requirements and conditions of service for graduate student appointments, or consult the department of your major. The 2002-2003 minimum stipend for students pursuing a master's degree is $600 per month for a 50 percent appointment.
