How to Apply as an International Freshman

To apply as an International Freshman, applicants must meet the Freshman Admission Requirements, and all Required Application items must be received by the University of Houston by the appropriate international deadlines.

Required Application Items

  1. Submit online application. Go to applytexas.org and submit your ApplyTexas application for the University of Houston (main campus).
  2. Pay $90 application fee. Pay the nonrefundable $90 application fee when you submit your ApplyTexas application or mail a check or money order to the Office of Admissions. Your check or money order must be payable to: University of Houston. The application fee cannot be refunded, waived or deferred.
  3. Send official secondary school/high school academic records. Official academic records (transcripts, mark sheets, graduation certificate/diploma, school leaving exam results, etc.), must be sent directly to the University of Houston in a sealed envelope from the school or issuing institution. Please review the required academic records for your country or educational system before applying.

How to Submit Academic Records

  • All academic records (transcripts, mark sheets, graduation certificate/diploma, school leaving exam results, etc.), submitted for admission review must be official.
  • Official academic records should be sent to UH directly from your school/institution, mailed in sealed envelopes. See mailing address below.
  • Attested copies of original academic records will be accepted only if they are attested by the Registrar, Principal, the Controller of Examination/Records, or the Ministry of Education. Unattested photocopies, notarized copies, faxes, scans will NOT be accepted.
  • All official academic records must bear the official institution/school seal and original signatures of the Registrar, Principal, the Controller of Examination/Records, or the Ministry of Education.
  • English Translations: All academic records (transcripts, mark sheets, graduation certificate/diploma, school leaving exam results, etc.), must be submitted in the original language with a certified literal English translation. Translations must prepared by the institution/school or a translation service accredited by the American Translator Association (http://www.atanet.org/) The translator should give you your translations in sealed envelopes. You should send theses sealed unopened envelopes to the UH Admissions.
  • If you have not graduated, you must submit all academic records for all semesters/years completed to date. If you are admitted to UH, you must provide final transcripts/mark sheets and degree certificates or diploma as soon as they are available.

Please Note: All documents received by the University of Houston become the property of the University of Houston and will not be returned to the applicant.

4. Send Official Test Scores. The Office of Admissions will use the highest test score from one test date.

  • TOEFL or IELTS test scores- All applicants are required to show proof of English Language Proficiency. For acceptable test scores and/or exemptions go to English Language Proficiency and Exemptions.
  • SAT I or ACT test scores- are required for all Freshman applicants who are completing or have completed high school (secondary education) in a IB school, British Curriculum (A-Levels), U.S. accredited high school, or in a UH recognized English-speaking country (click here for country list).

    All international freshman applicants are highly recommended to submit SAT or ACT test scores exam to fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirement.  Submitting SAT or ACT scores will also assist in determining scholarship eligibility and providing an early admissions decision.

How to Send Test Scores

Official test scores must be sent directly to the University of Houston from the testing agency. When you ask the testing agency to send your scores, use the codes the agencies have designated for the University of Houston.

  • SAT - 6870
  • TOEFL - 6870
  • ACT - 4236
  • IELTS - There is no institutional code for IELTS examination. The testing agency should mail official IELTS score report to the University of Houston (see address below).

Required Items for I-20 Form (F-1 Visa)

If you wish to receive the Form I-20 in order to apply for an F-1 visa and/or maintain F-1 status, please submit the required items below. The items can be uploaded to your myUH self-service account at accessuh.uh.edu. Navigate to UH Self Service>>Student Admission and upload documents as PDF files to your To-Do List for the corresponding item.

  • Letter of Financial Backing Form. The form must be less than six months old from the date of the sponsor(s)’ signature(s). Click here for the form.
  • Bank Statement. The bank statement must be less than six months old, and it must indicate a minimum balance of USD 36,550 or the equivalent.

  • Copy of biometric page of current passport. Submit a copy of your biometric  page of your current passport (and U.S. visa, if available).

  • International Address Form.  International students seeking an I-20 from the University of Houston must provide a physical address outside the United States in their home country. Click here for the form.

Transfer Students

If you are attending a school in the USA on an F-1 or J-1 Visa, and you plan to transfer to UH, you must contact your current International Advisor/DSO to complete the I-20/DS-2019 Transfer Form and request for your current school to release your SEVIS record to University of Houston-System.
