ANNUAL JAZZ FEST AT UH SPOTLIGHTS MASTER MUSICIANS, RISING STARS MARCH 2-3

For two nights in March, the University of Houston will be the spot for hot jam sessions featuring veteran jazz masters and the stars of tomorrow.

The Ninth Annual UH Moores Jazz Festival continues its tradition of pairing student jazz players with acclaimed recording artists for dynamic performances that dazzle local music buffs. This year’s festival is set for March 2 – 3 and will feature trombonist Conrad Herwig teaming with the Moores School of Music (MSM) Jazz Orchestra. The Texas Music Festival Jazz Project, which features the state’s top jazz players, also will perform.

“There are few trombonists who play like Conrad Herwig. By far, he’s one of the top players in the world,” said Noe Marmolejo, UH’s jazz area coordinator and associate professor of music. “He’s also great with students. He knows how to communicate with them and help them reach his level of performance.”

Herwig has performed with a number of jazz giants, including Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Eddie Palmeri, the Mingus Big Band and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. He has released 17 albums, including the Grammy-nominated LPs “Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles Davis” and “The Latin Side of John Coltrane.”

This is the second time Herwig has been the festival’s visiting guest artist. Other esteemed musicians who have brought their talents to the Moores Jazz Festival have included the late Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff and Kenny Garrett.

The Texas Music Festival Jazz Project kicks off the festival at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 2. Tickets for this performance are $10 and $5 for students and seniors. Herwig and the MSM Jazz ensemble perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 3. Tickets are $15 and $7 for students and seniors. The Moores box office can be reached at 713-743-3313.
