HOUSTON June 12, 2006—Rebecca Lee, assistant professor in
the UH Department of Health and Human Performance, has accepted
a position with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for
Scientific Review as a member of the Community-Level Health Promotion
Study Section. Some of Lee’s duties will include reviewing
and recommending NIH grant applications and surveying the progression
of research from grant recipients.
To be considered for this position, members must possess a “demonstrated
competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced
by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific
journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements
and honors,” said Tony Scarpa, director of Center for Scientific
Review.
“I’m honored to be part of a group whose purpose is
to assist those working to educate or eradicate public health issues,”
Lee said. “Working in Houston gives me a unique perspective
on community health care concerns and the most effective methods
by which to address these concerns.”
Lee will continue to teach courses on clinical and public health
solutions to obesity at UH’s Department of Health and Human
Performance. Her research focuses on environmental factors that
may contribute to obesity and related health illnesses. She has
been lead investigator for the Physical Activity Resource Assessment
(PARA), a new survey rating the quality and availability of physical
activities, as well as the STAR project, Striving Together Achieving
