Program Philosophy

University of Houston’s Performance Review Philosophy:

Each staff member is an integral component in the success of achieving the stated goals of the University of Houston and to our principles of “Inspiring Excellence.” Staff deliver success through their competencies: professional expertise, innovation, communication and cultural awareness. Continued success requires effective and interactive performance dialogues between staff and supervisors that identify goals, initiatives, professional development, results, accountability and mutual respect.

With this in mind the University of Houston implemented the Performance Communication and Development Program. This strategic approach to performance management focuses the staff member and supervisor on having regular dialogues linking performance expectations, feedback and coaching in alignment with the organization’s strategic principles and imperatives.

Two important advantages of this program are the choice of formats and supervisor training. The choice of formats provides supervisors and staff with options that will result in better coaching conversations for both. These conversations motivate and build buy-in are best accomplished by a format choice that works for particular set of circumstances. This stresses that the value of a performance review is not in the format but in aligning organization objectives with the staff member's achievement, recognition, and professional development.

The other advantage of this format is training for all supervisors. Training for supervisors focuses on overcoming problems that derail performance, structuring performance discussions to optimize buy-in, linking coaching and feedback to the communication process, ensuring performance dialogues include exploration of professional and career development.

With the Performance Communication and Development Program in place, each of us can provide objectives/initiatives as a basis for performance communications and development, improve dialogue between staff members and supervisors, advance professional/career development and provide a choice of formats to address a variety of situations. Ultimately, we all can contribute to attracting and keeping a high performing and engaged staff.
