China Learning Abroad Program

The China Study Abroad Program is a two-week educational and cultural study program designed to provide an opportunity to learn about the Chinese culture, history, education, politics, philosophy, economics and government through lectures, workshops, cultural event  and social activities in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai China. Registered UH students are eligible for three to six hours of UH credit from this study.

The group will take lectures and engage in academic activities from the following schools and institutions: The Central Nationalities in Beijing, Beijing Normal University, Northwest University, Xi’an Foreign Affairs University, China East Normal University as well as Shanghai University of Politics and Law.

The program cost is being determined, along with roundtrip airfare between Houston and Beijing (at a group discount rate).  The cost will include hotels in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai, transportation (train and airplane) within China, and admission fees to tourist sites and music/art performances.  A non-refundable application fee of $50 is due before the Asian American Studies Center will accept an application.

Registered UH students are eligible to apply for an International Education Fund Scholarship at the Provost’s Learning Abroad Office.

The Asian American Studies Center at UH will provide 35 travel awards in the amount of $800 for each student and additional $500/per student who wants to give a presentation at the Beijing International Educational Conference during the trip.

Aside from the educational and academic value of this program, we offer our students with opportunities to visit national and historical treasures in China, including the following sites: the Great Wall, Ming Tombs, the Temples of Heaven, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Waterfront Band, Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Yu Gardens, Terra Cotta Warriors, Grand Mosque, Wild Goose Pagoda and Ancient City Wall.

China Learning Abroad Travel Scholarship Application

In support of the Learning Abroad Program and international education, the Asian American Studies Center will offer 35 $800/each travel scholarship awards for undergraduate and graduate students who participate in the 2018 Summer Program. Travel Scholarships will be awarded in lump sums and without the need to provide travel receipts. Travel awards will be deposited directly into the UH student accounts. Who can apply?

All UH students, faculty and staff, as well as interested community members are welcome to join the program.

How do I apply?

Interested participants must submit an application to the Asian American Studies Center. The following requirements must be met before travel:

  • Submission of a completed application form and $50 non-refundable application fee
  • Submission of a valid passport and a $140 visa application fee for entry to China
  • Submission of the program cost before April 12, 2018
  • Hepatitis A & B vaccines are recommended before travel
